What started as an obsession with tracking if Georgetown could finally get butts in seats (spoiler: we haven’t yet!) has turned into a full-blown Big East basketball attendance tracker. Welcome to our weekly Big East Attendance Write-up, where we, well, track Big East attendance.

We have created a spreadsheet that tracks total attendance, as well as the percent capacity filled. The tracker is a work in progress, so if people have ideas or criticisms of the tracker, shoot us a note, and we will consider implementing them. Now, without further ado, this week’s attendance:

Caveats: St. John’s has played three games in a sold-out Carnesecca (5,260). Seton Hall has played two games in a sold-out Walsh (1,308).

Butts in Seats Award of the Week to the Team with the Most Butts in Seats: UConn! Surprisingly, not the game you’d think. UConn and Bryant drew 15,495 to PeoplesBank.

Butts Not in Seats Award of the Week to the Team with the Least Butts in Seats: DePaul. This may become an evergreen award for the Blue Demons. 2,762 (the lowest attendance figure of any team this year) made the trek from Lincoln Park down to Chinatown to see DePaul take down Gardner-Webb 93-62.

The Georgetown Award for Doing Slightly Better Than Last Year: Georgetown! Your Receiving Votes Fighting Hoyas of Georgetown, through four home games last year, had an average attendance of 4,993 (excluding the McDonough season opener). Georgetown is sitting at 5,086 this year. That’s almost ONE HUNDRED more people a game. Slightly better – keep it up!

Year-over-Year Comparison:

For anyone curious, this table shows current attendance numbers vs. final attendance numbers from the prior year. Obviously, as Big East play begins to ramp up, attendance ramps up as well. Maybe one day I’ll track YoY change from this point last year to current attendance numbers, but this blog doesn’t make money, and I need to work.

Until next week – Enjoy Feast Week, go Big East, and Hoya Saxa.

Mr. Paronoia.

Oof. Thanks for the reality check. Consistent winning is probably the only cure. Even given that, we’re in a much different era than when the Hoyas were last relevant (2007 run = iPhone launch, 2012-2014 years predated Tik Tok by a few years). Even with winning can the Hoyas draw more than 10k for conference games? Maybe Cooley in Year 7 with two Elite 8s under his belt can convince the neighborhood that we need the on campus 8k seat arena that’s been dreamed about!
