As we enter Year Three of the Cooley Era, fan interest in the Georgetown men’s basketball team is on the upswing. Is it at an all-time high? Not just yet. But all signs indicate that we’re out of the Ewing doldrums, we’ve moved beyond the initial growing pains our staff experienced in year one, and we’re at least
relevant on the national scene once again, having finished in KenPom’s top 100, earned a Crown Berth (Hoyas After Dark, stand up!), developed a first-round draft pick, and declared ourselves “rich as shit.”

Twenty years later, it’s once again: respect is back, fear is next.

And yet, despite an unmistakable uptick in fan interest, it’s been apparent for a few years now that there’s space for another outlet to cover Georgetown basketball. HoyaTalk, the OG of Georgetown internet hubs, still offers a place for the Oldtimers to vent; Hoya Report and Hilltop Hoops, two of the earliest outlets covering recruiting in particular, break the occasional recruiting scoop; and Casual Hoya, irreverent home to some of the most memorable blog posts and comments sections of the JTIII era, reminds us all that Rick Pitino exists. There are others out there too.

Still, as fans across eras have connected over the past few years, there’s been a demand for more. For what in particular? Among other things, there seems to be a consensus that we need at least the following:

  • An unabashed fan’s perspective. We are not journalists. With perhaps a rare exception, we are not going to be breaking news and we don’t plan to be fair and balanced. We love Georgetown and that’s going to infuse everything we do. You want an honest assessment of whether Providence has become a better job than Georgetown? It definitely isn’t and you can see yourself out.
  • An outlet that is positive or at least not unnecessarily negative. In light of the last bullet, we want Georgetown to
succeed. We are optimistic. We expect that Georgetown will turn things around and compete again on a national stage, whether in 2025-26 or soon thereafter. We believe in the guy our administration hired; we do
not feel the need to dwell on certain alternatives. Our coverage of the team is therefore going to be tinged with that positive outlook. That said, as alums and/or longtime admirers of Georgetown University, we’re not idiots; we’re not blind; we’re capable of at least occasionally rational thought. So we’re not going to be unreasonably optimistic or refuse negativity where negativity is genuinely warranted. If things go poorly, we will say so. Our overall goal, however, is to improve the vibes around the program, not to kill them. Given two reasonable alternatives, we are going to look at the program through rosier-tinted glasses.
  • Media offerings befitting the times. Things have changed since 1984, 2007, even 2023. It doesn’t cut it anymore to just have a simple message board, a standalone blog, or even a Twitter account. These days, it seems to us that any respectable fan site offers a Podcast, some analysis, advanced stats, a place for fans to engage with one another, and basic social media engagement. We’re planning to offer all of that—maybe even a TikTok. It may not roll out all at once, but it’s coming.
  • A home for diverse fan-perspectives and basketball knowledge. Hoya Nation is rich with perspectives and voices of true ball-knowers. We want there to be a home for everything Georgetown Basketball – the program, the recruiting, the paranoia, – but also, the basketball. We aim to be a home for all of that, providing a platform for the voices you’ve come to know and follow, and unlocking the potential of even more.

These don’t strike us as particularly greedy requests, and yet there’s no outlet—nor really even a combination of them—that offers all of this right now. That’s unacceptable. If Georgetown’s going to be a player on the national stage, its fans should be too. So that’s where we come in.

Who are we? We’ll introduce ourselves in the coming days. For now, suffice it to say that we’re a pretty diverse bunch—alums and non-alums alike, spanning the early JTIII years through the Cooley era. (JTII and Esherick era alums are welcome too!) None of us are quitting our day jobs to do this, but we’re excited to share our thoughts on the program with fellow alums and the rest of the world too. Want to share yours as well? Drop us a line: [email protected]

As much fun as we had during the 2024-25 season, one of the harder parts was the loss of Dikembe Mutombo—a program legend of such epic stature that we hardly need to remind you of his contributions to the Hilltop. One of the most amazing things about Dikembe is that he has to have a near 100 percent approval rating in the Georgetown community; not even our greatest player or greatest coach can claim that. So it seemed fitting to honor Dikembe in naming this burgeoning new media empire.

Don’t like it?

No no no.

Not many of you remember but the above comment by Emmet FitzGerald is from a former Hoya basketball player from the 70s! We both were there from the beginning of big John and Hoya Paranoia! We both bleed Hoya Blue and Grey! Welcome to the Arena Gentleman and good luck!

Good luck – I like the mission and intent and we could use another outlet – especially one looking for upside!
